Plan Your Visit

Know what to expect before you go underground

Best time for a tour

Any time of year works well. Caves in Tennessee usually stay around 54 to 59 degrees, so they feel cool in summer and milder than the surface in winter. Pick the date that fits your schedule, then dress for the weather outside.

What to wear

Wear solid shoes with good grip and clothes you do not mind getting dirty. A light layer is smart even in warm weather because the cave stays cool. Skip anything loose, precious, or hard to move in.

What to bring

Bring water, any food or snacks you will want before or after the tour, and whatever personal basics you need for the day. Gear is provided for your tour, do not overthink it. You need less equipment than most people assume.

Before you arrive

Give yourself a little buffer. Rushing into a cave tour is a bad way to start. Use the restroom beforehand, check the weather at the surface, and make sure everyone in your group is ready to go.

Safety underground

Listen to your guide, watch your footing and stay with the group. Caves are dark, uneven and unfamiliar by nature. That is part of why people come, and it is also why attention matters. Follow your guide's lead, keep your eyes on the ground, and do not wander.

Come ready

Bring a little nerve with you. Most people are fine once they get moving, but caves can still test people with darkness, mud, tight spots or the simple fact that the ground is not flat. You do not need to be fearless. You do need to be willing to keep going.
