Best time of year for a tour
What changes by season, what stays the same, and why cave tours work well year-round.

The short answer is simple: any time of year is a good time for a cave tour. Outside weather changes a lot in Tennessee. Inside the cave, conditions stay much steadier.
Caves in the Southeast, and especially in Tennessee, tend to hold a fairly constant temperature around 54 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit. That makes them one of the few places where summer and winter both feel manageable the moment you step underground.
In summer, that steady cool air can feel like a reset after heat, humidity, and direct sun. If the outside temperature is pushing into the 80s or 90s, a cave tour feels noticeably more comfortable. You still want water and sensible clothes, but the cave itself offers relief that is hard to get outdoors in July or August.
In winter, the same cave can feel warmer than people expect. It is not warm in a T-shirt-and-shorts sense, but it is sheltered from wind, freezing rain, and sharp temperature swings. When the outside air is raw and cold, a cave tour often feels calmer and easier than many above-ground outings.
Spring and fall are great too. Those seasons usually bring the mildest weather at the surface, which makes the full trip more comfortable from parking area to entrance and back again. They can also be a good fit for visitors who want the cave experience without either peak summer heat or winter layers.
What changes through the year is mostly what happens before and after the tour: the drive, the weather outside, what you wear to the site, and how much water you want on hand. What stays the same is the cave itself. That consistency is a big part of the appeal.
If you are deciding when to come, the better question is not which season is acceptable. They all are. The better question is what kind of day you want around the tour. Want a break from summer heat? Come in summer. Want a break from winter cold? Come in winter. Want the easiest surface conditions? Spring and fall usually win.
There is no bad season for going underground. You just dress for the weather outside and enjoy the fact that the cave keeps doing its own thing.
